2022 Venice Film Festival Preview: Don’t Worry Darling, Blonde and The Banshees of Inisherin will all debut. (Warner Bros./Netflix/Searchlight)

This week marks the start of the festival season with the start of the Venice Film Festival in Italy. Fall film festivals for years have set the tone for which titles are likely to clean up awards season. With a host of acclaimed directors making their big comeback behind the camera after a long absence, this year’s Venice Biennale will likely serve as a springboard for some of the best films of the year.

With that in mind, here are just a handful of upcoming movies that are sure to be on any New Year’s awards list.

White noise

Noah Baumbach, Oscar-nominated screenwriter and director (The squid and the whale, Francesca Ha, The stories of Meyerowitz) reunites with his Marriage story starring Adam Driver in this long-awaited apocalyptic action film adaptation of Don DeLillo’s 1985 novel of the same name.

White noise is Baumbach’s eleventh narrative film and the first not to be based on an original story. It also happens to be the first real Netflix-produced title to open the Festival, which is in its 79th year. Driver plays a Hitler Studies professor and father of four whose life is turned upside down when a cataclysm occurs in his sleepy hometown. Also in the cast are Greta Gerwig, Raffey Cassidy, Jodie Turner-Smith and Don Cheadle.

Martin McDonagh (In Bruges, Three billboards outside Ebbing, Missouri) reunites with his In Bruges co-stars Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson in this new comedy drama that also stars Barry Keoghan (The killing of a sacred deer).

The film was shot entirely in Inishmore, off the west coast of Ireland, and is Macdonagh’s first film since the Academy Award. Three billboards which was released in 2017. He follows two friends who find themselves in a difficult situation when one abruptly ends their relationship.

Mexican screenwriter and director Alejandro González Iñárritu (Babel, Birdman, The avenger) returns with a new Spanish-language comedy that is part of the official competition.

He is played by prolific Spanish-born Mexican actor Daniel Giménez Cacho as a famous journalist and documentary maker suffering from a debilitating existential crisis. The film was shot in Mexico for five months last year and is the director’s first film since then The avenger for which he won an Oscar and for which Leonardo DiCaprio won his elusive, until then, Best Actor Oscar.

While we await the fate of his entourage Call me by your namewhich seems less and less likely due to ongoing controversy over Armie Hammer’s allegations, acclaimed Italian director Luca Guadagnino returns to Venice with his first narrative feature film from the remake of Dario Argento Suspiria in 2018.

Based on the novel of the same name by Camille DeAngelis, Bones and All stars Timothee Chalamet, Waves with Taylor Russell, Chloë Sevigny, Michael Stuhlbarg and Mark Rylance. He follows cannibal lovers Maren (Russell) and Lee (Chalamet) as they embark on an eventful journey through 1980s America.

Acclaimed screenwriter and director Darren Aronofsky has kept a fairly low profile since his 2017 film Mother! divided critics and audiences alike. Played by beloved actor Brendan Fraser (Blast from the Past, The Mummy), who is currently in full comeback mode, The whale tells the story of a morbidly obese middle-aged man who faces a series of struggles as he attempts to reconcile with his estranged daughter.

In addition to spending the summer wowing crowds around the world with his sold out pop tour, former One Direction band member Harry Styles is about to solidify his place at the top with the release of Smart book the long-awaited second feature by director Olivia Wilde Don’t worry honey.

Styles stars opposite Florence Pugh in a role that took over from troubled actor Shia LaBeouf after the latter left production during rehearsal. The film tells the story of a 1950s housewife who lives in a utopian experimental community with her husband, who begins to fear that her company may hide disturbing secrets.

Ana de Armas acts blonde, Netflix produced a biographical psychological drama by New Zealand writer and director Andrew Dominik. The film is adapted from the 2000 novel of the same name by acclaimed American author Joyce Carol Oates and is a fictionalized retelling of the story of Marilyn Monroe.

Also in the cast are Adrien Brody, Bobby Cannavale and Scoot McNairy. This is Dominik’s first narrative feature film since the release of his critically acclaimed film The assassination of Jesse James by the coward Robert Ford in 2007.

The eternal daughter

Tilda Swinton stars in this intriguing ghost story by The memory And The memory part II director Joanna Hogg. The film is produced by A24 and will have its world premiere in Venice on 6 September.

He follows an artist and her elderly mother as they face long-buried secrets when they return to their old family home which has been converted into a hotel.
