Andy Murray, Jack Draper and Harriet Dart all scored victories on a very successful first day of the US Open for Great Britain.

Murray kicked things off with his first two-set Grand Slam win for five years, beating Argentina’s 24th-seeded Francisco Cerundolo 7-5 6-3 6-3.

Having entered the game short of wins and worried about a cramping problem that hit him in several games, this was a very positive start to his season.

Murray said: “Mentally it’s not easy to face a five-set match in those conditions after the past few weeks have been for me, and I did well.

“I did well physically and mentally to put it in the back of my mind and find a way to make it. So I was really happy with it.

“It was really tough conditions out there. It was really OK at first, but towards the end it was getting really quite hot and humid. I thought I did a good job out there. He could have closed a few sets faster, but overall it was a solid performance ”.

Murray will face young American Emilio Nava as he sets out to reach round three at Flushing Meadows for the first time since 2016.

Although Draper’s clash with Finn Emil Ruusuvuori was his first game as a senior in New York, such was his meteoric rise this season that he was already considered someone to avoid in the draw.

And that won’t change after an efficient 6-4 6-3 6-3 success to organize an intriguing second-round clash against sixth-seeded Felix Auger-Aliassime.

“It’s my third Grand Slam, second in merit,” said Draper, 20. “I would say that for me it is a really important victory. He had me at Queen’s, he played an amazing game there, so there were definitely doubts in my mind before the game.

“But I was proud of the way I handled my first time here, I thought I played a solid game. I think I can still improve tennis, but mentally and physically it was a good performance ”.

The result of the day from the British point of view came from Dart, who stunned 10th seeded Daria Kasatkina 7-6 (8) 1-6 6-3 for her first top-10 win.

The British number two had never won a main draw match at Flushing Meadows and appeared to be having a very difficult match against Russia’s Kasatkina, who is ranked ninth after winning a WTA Tour title on Saturday.

But Dart fought superbly in hot conditions on Field 12, recovering from a shaky second set and then coming back from behind in the third to continue his best career year.

The 26-year-old’s reward is a win-win match in the second round against Hungarian Dalma Galfi.

The only British defeat was expected when Kyle Edmund, playing his first Grand Slam singles match for two years after three knee operations, fell to a 6-3 7-5 6-2 defeat to Casper Ruud, fifth seeded.

Reigning champion Emma Raducanu, seventh-seeded Cameron Norrie and 20th-seeded Dan Evans will all bid to join the British winners on Tuesday.
