Finding friendship in a co-worker can improve your work experience, especially during times of stress. Sometimes, you just need one person to lean on and it will transform the whole day.

So it’s no surprise that having nice colleagues is the main reason people say their organization is a good place to work, according to new research from HR software provider Ciphr. Good pay and job security completed the first three responses.

It doesn’t cost to be kind and we are grateful for the times our colleagues have gone out of their way to support us. So inspired by the research, we asked readers to share the kindest things colleagues have done for them.

From kindness to marriage.

“Working in a bookstore on one of the busiest days of Christmas, I went into the closet to cry a little after being yelled at by a customer,” says Cathie Addison-Swan, 25, who is now a journalist and lives in Whitley Bay.

“My new colleague, with whom I had just spoken at the time, followed me to hug me and give a pep talk. Now we are married! “

They support my mental health

“I took a job at a small local restaurant about three years ago and worked with a really lovely and genuine group of people,” says Georga Hughes, a 26-year-old writer from Chester.

“I was struggling with my mental health and never felt like I could talk to people about it before. But my colleagues were so understanding and gave me the opportunity to speak freely about mental health for the first time and it changed my life forever.

“Even when the customers were rude and awful, I really enjoyed working with them. We are still a small group of friends and we meet all the time ”.

My team always had lunch with me

Sam, a 25-year-old financial analyst from Manchester, says his colleagues would never let him have lunch alone, proving it’s the little things that can make the biggest difference.

“Since I was the youngest, everyone treated me like their little brother, gave me advice on how to survive the rat race and other things,” he says.

My colleagues give me the best gifts

“My colleagues always give me nice gifts around my birthday,” says Femi Coker, 28-year-old Operations Executive from London.

“In 2018 one of my colleagues asked me what my favorite anime character was and what I like to do in my spare time. I said “Luffy” and “photograph”.

“After my annual leave, the whole office flooded my desk with gifts like a Luffy pop animation figure and a Go Pro-like camera with camera bag.”

It helped me when I was overwhelmed

Isabella Silvers, a 30-year-old London journalist, went through a really tough time a few years ago. “I was dealing with problems in my personal life and work situations, and I was incredibly anxious,” she says.

“While some colleagues criticized my behavior, one saw that I needed help and support. He took me aside when he saw that I was stressed and encouraged me to breathe through the tears when I was overwhelmed.

“This meant so much to me and helped me get through that period of my life.”

My colleague helped me during my miscarriage

Charlotte Goss, a 30-year-old from York who runs a virtual support business, was assisted by a colleague when she had a miscarriage last year.

“I confided in one of my team members and not only did they listen to me on Zoom, but I had several voice note check-ins on WhatsApp over the next few weeks. Even a little “thinking of you” gift in the post, “she says.

“He shouldn’t have done that. I know how hard it is to talk about losing a baby, but she really went beyond “I’m so sorry to hear that.”

“I no longer have the ‘leave your problems at the door’ attitude and I like to think that his kindness has changed the way I present myself as an ear that listens to my friends, colleagues and clients. He showed me that kindness is really the key. “
