Harry Styles apologized to fans for his absence from the 2022 MTV VMAs despite being “down the road” as he became the first British big winner of the night.

The 28-year-old superstar won Album of the Year at the annual ceremony, which clashed with his performance at New York’s Madison Square Garden.

This year’s VMAs will be held less than an hour away at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey.

Styles’ victory followed that of fellow pop sensational Taylor Swift, who was awarded Best Long-Length Video for All Too Well (10 Minute Version) (Taylor’s Version).

The video, which features Stranger Things star Sadie Sink and Teen Wolf star Dylan O’Brien, went viral earlier this year after fans speculated that the song was based on Swift’s breakup with l ‘actor Jake Gyllenhaal.

The venue exploded when Swift took the stage and thanked young stars Sink and O’Brien, adding that the production team had “put their whole heart” into the video.

“Before that I had directed and written my own music videos, but I had never made a short film,” he told the screaming audience.
