“You look tired.” Three words you never want to hear. It’s bad enough when you deserve to look broken. When you’ve had a wild night out that saw you swallow a week of drive and then get under five hours. But when did you really get a good night’s sleep? Now it’s depressing.

I have been asked if I am tired a few times recently. Call it age, juggling a single parent vacation, energy bill anxiety – whatever, it’s having an effect. Forget the whore face at rest – I have a tired face at rest. I’ve been here before. And the good news is, being a beauty editor, I know how to counter it.

Over the two decades that I have been doing this job, I have absorbed all the tips and tricks from the insiders of makeup artists. I’ve seen how they can take a faded, faded celebrity straight out of LA’s red eye and make her look fresh and radiant, like they’ve slept in a hyperbaric oxygen chamber and consumed nothing but green juices for a week. So what’s the score?

Well, first and foremost it’s about accepting that after the age of 30 you will have to put in some effort. Oh, I know we all crave the blatant light-heartedness of a ’90s Kate Moss, that off-duty model aesthetic that looks clean, completely devoid of makeup. Newsflash, even Mossy can no longer work. She will require a minimum of effort to look effortlessly radiant. But not much, I promise. Five minutes maximum

I’m calling my friend Caroline Barnes. She is a makeup artist with many celebrities on speed dial and a reputation for transforming tired faces. Follow these genius tricks and you’ll soon hear these three best words: “Have you been away?”

1. Be strategic with your concealer.

“Darkness and shadow make your face look tired,” says Barnes. He suggests adding light by placing a concealer under the eyes and around the nose. “The important thing is that the concealer you are using is opaque. All those super clear, brightening formulations don’t last and don’t cover enough. Myself? I find that drawing a swipe of concealer from the outer corner of the eye to the tail of the forehead and then blending really helps to lift the whole area. As well as a corrector point in the inner corner.

2. Embrace the creamy color (and ditch the nude)

“If you feel tired, step away from the nude palette,” says Barnes. “It’s best to brighten up the face with color, because it brightly distracts and awakens the face.” He loves corals, watermelon or soft reds. If you’re aiming for that weekend glow, there are brands that specialize in that healthy, off-duty glow aesthetic (think brand new Hermes makeup, Chanel Les Beiges range, or the more affordable Sculpted by Aimee Connolly). It goes without saying that blushing is your friend. Choosing a multi-tasking product that can also be stroked on both the apples of the cheeks and the lips is great for saving time. Avoid products with too much shimmer as they exaggerate lines and wrinkles.

3. Use shiny mascara (but not on the lower lashes)

Mascara makes everything better. Choose a formulation that makes lashes silky and shiny, rather than something too dramatic or fake. And “it only sticks to the upper lashes,” says Barnes. “This makes you look smarter. The mascara on the lower lashes adds the darkness you don’t need in that area right now. My advice? Be more thorough in removing last night’s makeup from under the eyes. Use a cotton swab dipped in micellar water. Any trace of darkness here will aggravate tired looking eyes. If you have time, using an eyelash curler will also make a difference.

4. Prepare before your enthusiasm

Caroline Barnes has a routine that brings even the most tired famous faces back to life. First, she rubs a blend of essential oils on her client’s wrists (she likes de Mamiel Altitude Oil, £ 30) and then asks her clients to inhale, taking a few deep breaths and a moment for themselves. “The tension releases from their face and the tension around their lips and jaw softens. Next, Barnes takes out some Oliviere Wilson, £ 90, Cryo ice sticks from her toolbox and presses them around the socket to deflate and refresh the skin. Finally use a tissue mask – rate Seoulista Beauty Super Hydration Instant Facial, £ 7.99, Meder Beauty Hydra Fill Deep Moisturizing Mask, £ 61 for 5 and Shiseido Vital Perfection Liftdefine Radiance Face Masks, £ 91 for 6 – taking a few minutes later massage into the remaining serum. “Even if you only do it for two minutes it’s better than nothing.”

5. Light up your eyes

One trick I like to use is eye drops. I use the Lumify eye drops, £ 17.90, as recommended by makeup artist Ruby Hammer. It always works no matter how little I’ve slept.
