When it comes to BAZAARThe best skin care brands in the Holy Grail, La Mer is a name that often tops the list. From its decadent and celebrity-beloved Crème de La Mer and soft moisturizer to the brand’s best-selling Renewal Concentrate and Oil, La Mer’s range of luxury products rarely disappoint, which is why we were thrilled to try The Micro Peel, one of its latest innovations.

Created as a reinterpretation of a traditional facial peel, The Micro Peel features a biphasic formula that aims to gently resurface the complexion while refining it over time. It uses a combination of ingredients, including a refining ferment to lower the skin’s pH balance, marine enzymes to enhance collagen production, and La Mer’s exclusive Miracle Broth to nourish and restore its lipid barrier.

Here, four BAZAAR editors offer their opinions on The Micro Peel after using it consistently for a week, some even longer. Spoiler Alert: We may have just found a new favorite exfoliant.

As I have tried

I proceeded with caution: as indicated, I applied the peel in the evening after cleansing, dispensing the solution in the palm of my hand, then pressing it on the skin. So, I topped it with a moisturizer to minimize the risk of inflammation. The next morning my skin was smooth, clear and not red at all, a good sign. I skipped the next night, applying on the third night and waking up with the same result: soft, comfortable skin.

Ease of use

As the oldest member of the BAZAAR beauty team, I have tried more than a few exfoliating products and consider myself to be quite skilled in skin care. But I was confused by The Micro Peel. The instructions simply say: Apply to clean skin in the evening. Does that mean every night? Or every two or three nights … increasing the frequency as my tolerance increases? My skin can be sensitive and this peel is packed with multiple hydroxy acids (alpha, beta and poly), a recipe, in my mind, for potential irritation.

Price / value

A small solution goes a long way, a good thing given the $ 270 price tag.

The verdict

I’ve been using the peel for a few weeks now, applying it every two or three nights and overlaying a moisturizer. My skin looks and feels smoother and, importantly, it is not red or flaky. Therefore, despite my somewhat uncertain start, I am pleased with the results and would recommend the peel to anyone with aged skin (and a sizable beauty budget) looking for a gentle and effective exfoliant.

As I have tried

I have fair, sensitive skin and tend to be a little wary of peels. I am also an underexfoliant (in the eyes of some, however, in my mind, I run the switch just enough). But I’m only human and it’s hard to resist any new La Mer product, peel or not.

Ease of use

My first mistake was throwing the box out; the instructions are not on the bottle itself, so I immediately forgot how often to use it, how much to use it and any other steps. A quick Google helped me, but it was still an extra step. I swirled the mixture to activate it, then used the dropper to dispense the product into my hand, then onto my face. (Note: not to look too similar The New York Times Cooking app, but work fast here; the product separates again quite quickly.)

The first time I applied it, I was a little worried. My cheeks turned bright pink (think: vintage illustrations of Santa Claus), although they soon calmed down. But when I tried the product again two days later (and for each subsequent use), there was no redness. Instead, I would simply wake up with softer, brighter looking skin.

Price / value

The price is an investment, sure, but if you’re willing to shell out close to $ 300 (once your taxes are calculated) for smooth skin, it’s worth doing.

The verdict

As promised, this product is gentle enough for sensitive skin. The redness I had was short lived and there were no other unpleasant side effects, just a morning glow.

As I have tried

Every night for a week, I applied about a quarter of a dropper of The Micro Peel to my skin after cleansing. After shaking the bottle, I dispensed the product into the palm of my hands before gently tapping it on my face and neck, avoiding the eye area. I followed up with a moisturizer.

Ease of use

The texture is on the watery side which is why I put it on my hands first instead of directly on the face because it flows quickly. Aside from the somewhat vague indications, I have not found this product difficult to use.

Price / value

Sure, there are less expensive exfoliants than this, but it’s La Mer. The luxury price was expected. However, there are 30 milliliters of product here, which I think could last a fair amount of time.

The verdict

I have easily congested, acne prone skin which is on the oilier side. I liked that, for me at least, it was gentle enough for frequent use. I found no redness, burning or other signs of irritation. The morning after use, I would wake up with slightly dull skin (which I am indifferent to), but the congestion I am used to seeing around my nose seemed to improve over time. However, to see noticeable changes in the overall texture of my skin, I would probably need more than a week of testing.

As I have tried

I usually use a dermatologist-prescribed retinol every night, so I was a little worried about swapping my reference tube for The Micro Peel, even with La Mer’s reputation for high and effective products suitable for most skin types. Despite my hesitation, I used about a quarter of a full dropper, eventually to half by the end of my trial, of exfoliating every night for just over a week to test the results.

Although Micro Peel’s instructions indicated that a user might experience a slight tingling sensation during application, the product was so delicate that I felt almost nothing. However, I did notice that my face looked slightly brighter and more even each time I used the peel, which was immediately noticeable.

Ease of use

Using Micro Peel was foolproof enough as it includes a built-in dropper, but its minimal application instructions left me wondering if I’d actually used it correctly. Since its texture is a bit runny, I highly recommend adding it to a cupped palm and then pressing it to your face for maximum impact on the complexion.

Price / value

Sure, $ 270 is probably more money than I’d normally spend on a single skincare item, but when it comes to La Mer, you definitely get what you pay for, in a good way. And since a small portion of this product goes a long way, you can ultimately get good value for money if there’s room in your budget to add it to your cart.

The verdict

Micro Peel is worth adding to any complexion refreshing regimen that isn’t overly aggressive (which is always a plus). After using it at night, I’m definitely interested in adding it to my training and seeing how my skin can become smooth and even with continued use.

Final grade: 4.0

According to BAZAAR eds, The Micro Peel is worth the purchase, although it might be expensive for some beauty aficionados. Its gentle yet effective formula works perfectly on different skin types, from sensitive to oily and acne prone, making it easy to add to any spin without fear of irritation.
